She didn’t necessarily want to become known as Spokane’s “gay pastor” but that’s kinda’ what happened when Rev. Marj Johnston became the first openly gay minister to serve in a Spokane church. (Well, besides the pastor at the Metropolitan Community Church).
That was in 2007 when she was hired to serve as the assistant pastor at Westminster United Church of Christ. Johnston has since left that position and now serves pastor of Dayton First Congregational Church- UCC. She also serves as a local consultant, helping area churches understand Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues.
